How to Plan an Alaska Vacation: What to Consider Before You Book
Planning an Alaska vacation can feel exciting at first. You begin imagining glaciers, wildlife, mountains, and small coastal towns. Then you start researching and realize there are many different ways to experience Alaska.
Before you begin comparing cruise lines, itineraries, or the best price, start with one question:
What do you want to experience in Alaska?
Your answer can help guide almost every decision that follows.
Start With the Experience You Want
You may be dreaming about seeing glaciers and wildlife. You may want to explore coastal towns, experience Denali National Park, ride the Alaska Railroad, learn more about Alaska’s history and culture, or spend time surrounded by nature. You may want active days filled with exploration, or you may prefer a slower pace with plenty of time to take in the scenery.
Thinking about what matters most to you first can make the rest of the planning much easier.
Decide How You Want to Experience Alaska
As you begin researching, you will probably see several different types of Alaska vacations.
A roundtrip cruise usually begins and ends in the same city, such as Seattle or Vancouver. This can make airfare and transportation easier and allows you to experience several Alaska ports while unpacking only once.
A one-way cruise travels northbound or southbound between Vancouver and Alaska. This can make it easier to add time in Alaska before or after your cruise.
A cruisetour combines a cruise with a land portion arranged through the cruise line. Your land itinerary may include places such as Denali National Park, Anchorage, Fairbanks, or other areas of interior Alaska.
A custom land vacation gives you more flexibility to decide where you want to go, how long you want to stay, and how you want to travel. You might include scenic rail travel, lodges, national parks, wildlife experiences, or a rental car journey.
You do not need to know which one is right for you before you begin planning. You simply need to think about how much of Alaska you want to experience and the style of travel that feels most comfortable to you.
If you are unsure how those choices fit together, this is where I can help as your trusted Alaska travel advisor. I can help you sort through the options and understand which ones best match the experience you want.
Look Beyond the Ship to the Itinerary
When you compare Alaska cruises, it can be tempting to focus on the ship first. But the itinerary can have just as much influence on your vacation.
You may visit places such as Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, or Sitka, and each offers a different experience. Each location may have different experiences for wildlife, history, scenery, culture, and outdoor activities.
You do not need to visit every Alaska port to have a meaningful vacation. What matters is choosing an itinerary that includes the places and experiences that are important to you.
Think About the Alaska You Want to Experience Beyond the Cruise
A cruise can introduce you to Alaska’s coastline, but you may also want to explore more of Alaska by land. If Denali National Park, Kenai Fjords National Park, a journey aboard the Alaska Railroad, or time in Anchorage or Fairbanks is part of the Alaska you are imagining, you may decide to add a cruisetour, plan a custom land itinerary, or choose a one-way cruise that makes it easier to spend additional time in Alaska.
Consider the Experiences You Do Not Want to Miss
Your Alaska vacation is not only about where you go. It is also about what you hope to experience while you are there. You may want to watch whales, see a glacier up close, take a flightseeing excursion, ride a scenic railway, search for wildlife, hike, kayak, or learn more about Alaska Native culture.
You do not need to choose every excursion before you book your vacation. But knowing which experiences are especially important to you can help you choose the right itinerary.
If glacier viewing is high on your list, look carefully at how glaciers are included in the itinerary. If wildlife is important to you, consider which ports and excursions may give you those opportunities. If Denali is something you have always wanted to experience, plan an interior cruistour or custom itinerary from the beginning.
Think About the Pace You Will Enjoy
Alaska offers so much that it can be tempting to fit everything into one vacation. But more is not always better. Think about how you want your days to feel.
Do you enjoy having something planned every day, or do you want time to slow down and enjoy the scenery?
Would you rather visit more places, or spend more time experiencing fewer places?
Are you comfortable changing hotels during a land journey, or would you prefer the ease of returning to the same cruise cabin each evening?
Your vacation should feel enjoyable while you are experiencing it, not just impressive when you look at the itinerary.
Instead of simply asking:
“Which Alaska vacation should I book?”
you can begin asking:
“Which Alaska vacation will give me the experiences I want to have?”
You do not have to answer every one of these questions before you begin planning. The goal is simply to understand what matters most to you. As your trusted Alaska travel advisor, I can help you sort through the choices, explain how the different options fit together, and guide you toward a vacation that reflects the Alaska experience you are imagining.
